Daily diary- observation

My teaching diary.

My teaching observation started with lecturer Outi Mäkitalo in her course by name "Asiakaslähtöisyys laboratorio toiminto ja vierianalytika". The course could be translated to English as " Customer focus and point of care testing in laboratory activities". There were a total of 42 students studying in the first year of the Biomedical laboratory course at the OAMK (OUAS) School of Health and Social care.

Observation- 30th September: Outi started with an introduction of the customer care services and their importance in laboratory. She spoke for about 30 minutes and later divided the students into groups of 6 each. each group of students are asked to assemble around a table where she had per-arranged a chart paper and some articles in Finnish relevant to customer care services. the groups were asked to spend close to 10 minutes in each table and write their first thoughts about the short articles. Each group were given a different colored pen to write their content. After their contribution at the first table they move to the next and the next group moves to the next and so on...
Towards the end of the circulation, all the groups got to look at all the articles and contribute in the chart papers. The last group landing on the tables will be the ones presenting the content.
I observed that the students were active during the discussion and writing.
It was a very good method because after the students hear from the teacher for some time, they tend to go into a static mode where they might lose the focus of learning. Task- based learning is the new method of teaching and I would like to implement it very much in my own teaching later!

Observation 3rd of November: Practical exams.
On 3rd morning there was a practical exam where the students were given a task of preparing LB (lysogeny broth) medium. This is a basic and most widely used medium for the growth of bacteria in biochemical laboratories. The students were given the final volume of the broth to be prepared and the chemical concentrations of the ingredients to prepare the medium. Everything from the finding of the reagents, glass ware to weighing of the chemicals and dissolving them is important in the preparation of the medium. The students also autoclave their own mediums and then finish the test. Afternoon was another test for the second year students to stain blood smear samples on a glass slide with MGG (May-Grunwald Giemsa) stain. The procedure would take about 20 minutes and then the students have to report the experiment in steps clearly.

Observing the students to go about the whole examination by following the protocol given by the teacher was also helpful in my understanding to prepare the material in clear, easy steps in the future.

Observation 4th of November:The students of first year were having a practical test of customer service course. The test was different than the other one in many different ways. The students had close to 6, 7 tasks to complete the test that lasted for nearly 7-8 hours. One interesting part of the test is that of role playing. A group of 4 students did the task of acting as a laboratory nurse taking a blood sample for a student who is acting as a patient. The other two students were the observers. The patient (student) was a very difficult patient in the sense that she was not ready to cooperate with the nurse very easily. The goal of the task was to prepare the students for the real job that they are being trained for. The observing students also give their opinion about the whole task.

After observing, I am not all the more motivated and ready to start my teaching practice. Although some came after my teaching practice, I consider the chance as useful as it would help me in the future.
